FIEO Hosts High-Level Dialogue in Kolkata on Emerging UK–India Trade Opportunities
JW Marriott, Kolkata, December 10:
The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) today organised a high-level interaction in Kolkata to explore emerging trade opportunities between India and the United Kingdom under CETA. The programme, held as part of the Niryat Bandhu initiative, aimed to guide and mentor new and aspiring exporters from Eastern India.
The session featured His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and former UK Chief Negotiator for the UK–India Free Trade Agreement, Mr. Harjinder Kang. Speaking at the event, he said:
“Trade relations between India and the UK are extremely positive right now. Business confidence in the trade deal has already boosted trade, and it will only grow stronger in the coming years.”
UK Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata, Dr. Andrew Fleming, also addressed the gathering along with senior members of the UK Trade Policy Team. Speaking on the progress of bilateral negotiations, Dr. Fleming said:
“After months of negotiation, the trade agreement has finally been signed. This is a turning point for businesses on both sides. The UK already imports significantly from India, but we expect an additional rise of £9.9 billion. UK consumers are highly conscious of product origins and eager to explore new brands. This creates immense opportunities for Indian exporters, as the agreement has liberalised 99% of the trade.”
A special address was delivered by Mr. Bipin Menon, Additional DGFT, who highlighted key considerations for exporters including compliance requirements, policy updates, and practical pathways for MSMEs and first-generation exporters under the Niryat Bandhu initiative.
The session was coordinated under the leadership of Mr. Abhishek Poddar, Regional Chairman, FIEO Eastern Region, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing together senior UK trade officials, DGFT leadership, and regional exporters. His initiative ensured that Eastern India’s exporters could directly engage with policymakers shaping the future of UK–India trade.
The event witnessed strong participation from exporters, industry representatives, and media, underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to strengthening economic ties and building a more opportunity-rich environment for trade.
